I was just wondering, what in the world drives us to a certain fish, or for that matter any fish.

I know there are quite a few people on this forum that take this hobby very very seriously. What drives you to do it?

Sometimes in more serious cases (offenders of any sort) peoply often have a past, or background that makes them commit certain crimes or causes them to be overly obsessive about a certain thing. For example, eating disorders are usually caused by the fear of being overweight.

I guess this question is more directed to those of you who are very serious about this hobby. Do you keep big or scary fish because you are lacking something somewhere else? What about you have fish tank after fish tank? Or the people that check MFK constantly?

What drives you? Is it just a hobby or do you live through your fish and your knowledge?

IMO. The sense of peacefulness and gracefulness when watchin these creatures. seems like they are floating to a certain extent. at the end , i cant explain it, all i know is i was warned once, that its going to be addictive. I'ts like cigarette. people will try them, only a few will actually smoke, only a few will be fish keepers, only a few will be MONSTER fish keepers ;)

noone drove me to keep fish i just wanted to start keeping them so i stay out of trouble ( even tho sometimes it doesnt work ) and yes it is like cigs. once you try your either addicted or disgusted.. thats as best as i can describe it.... i smoke cigars and raise fish BUT if i had a choice to either keep fish or smoke i wou chose FISHKEEPING FTW!

20 years ago I had fish, and several tanks. Then got out of it when I moved out of my parents home.

Along comes the internet and forums. It makes it even easier to get addicted to hobbies. Everything and answer is rite there at your fingertips.

I always surf craigslist and kept seeing good deals on tanks. A few months ago I decided it was time to get back into the hobby and picked up my 120 and 75. Then there was the cheap 35 hex set up, it was around the corner, I couldn't refuse. Then I found some used fish on CL and picked them up. I found a 30 gal full set up with a gar and RTC for free, free is for me! Who could pass up an Eclipse 6 and 20 plus a box of extras for $50? Another 120 with over flows for cheap (still sitting dry). How could I refuse the 130 36"x36"x24" with stand and top with only a small leak for $140. 6hrs later and some tubes of silicone and its up and running. After a month of refusing and holding out on a 300, a 200, and a 350. Last week I found the mother load a 500 gallon acrylic tank for $1100.. By time I get it set up I will probably spend another 4K on it.

I really enjoy caring for and watching the fish grow. Things are much easier now that I understand the water chemistry, 20 years ago I had no clue of.
In a few months time I now have around 60 healthy growing fishes in 7 tanks.
When I get the 500 set up I MAY cut back on the number of tanks but I doubt it.:)

I've always felt like I have an affinity to water and everything aquatic. Fish keeping just came naturally.

when i saw a green terror and a Red devil in a chinese food place i thought... I MUST HAVE THESE FISH! And then i just kept buying and buying.....

WOW! They serve them up there? :D

One by me had a Silver Arro for years. It must have died cause now they have goldfish.

For me it's just animals in general, fish aren't the only pets I have. But there's something beautiful about the natural world in all it's forms and fish are a graceful and interesting pet to keep. I tend to get a bit obsessive about any new hobby I start, and I am really loving learning about fish, water cycles, food etc etc. It's also something I can do in the privacy of my home, there's no danger in keeping them (I also have horses and have several falls etc and when I was breeding and had a stallion, lots of dangerous moments!) And I just find it relaxing. Water changes can get a bit tedious especially if you have more than one tank, but I like it, and I like knowing my fish are happy! (As with all my pets)
