Many people ask WHY I have the pets I do, saying the usual, you cant play with them, cant pet them, cant train them etc etc And I never know exactly how to answer it.

What makes us want to have our herps? What makes us want to get bigger and bigger, more exotic, more dangerous, prove we can provide and care of such animals?

Im up late and its a random question really.

What drives us monster herp keepers?

For me it is because I am fascinate by them in every respect. I also can not keep a dinosaur and they are the next best thing.

I feel like a hawk or eagle or falcon would be closer ot better.. I have always wanted a hawk.. haha ... But I keep em cuz I love to observe.

i keep reptiles because i am fascinated by every aspect of them, to interact with an animal that is the total polar opposite of humans

I love this question because I get asked this all the time. And for me the answer is, I don't know why. I do not remember a day in my life where herps and creepy crawlies were not a part of it. There are family pictures of me when I was about 3 with my grandma catching lizards and snakes down in the Ozarks. My parents owned a pet store. I did my undergraduate and graduate studies on reptilian physiology. These organisms are just fascinating and there is always something to learn.

Honestly it is because i find them 1000x more interesting then a normal dog or cat or any other pet like that.

I am always looking for something really unique. If no one else has ever seen one before, chances are I want it. It is hard to describe because I can't really put my finger on what it is that I love about herps but I imagine that it is similar to people who love cats and end up with 7 of them (like my aunt). That is how I explained it to her, "I keep reptiles for the same reason you keep cats, I just like them"

Because they rock. Period. and maybe some of steve irwin's touches.
