I have the same problem describing WHY. With my friends and relatives that keep pets, its easy. I keep them for the same reason they keep their dogs and cats, or whatever.

But with my fiance, it's harder. She's not really into keeping animals period. If it weren't for me, we probably wouldn't have a single animal, maybe just a cat. So she doesn't really get that argument. So sometimes its really hard for me to get her to understand why I want something, and to justify spending not just the money to buy it, but to feed and house it as well.

the fascination and obsession usually starts at early childhood. it is just part of your being, your love and deep interest for these creatures, something that most people will never understand. and almost always, people who are into herps and arachnids are people who are also into dinosaurs, dragons, alien creatures, and arthropoid monsters.

i am usually repelled by people who do not have love for any animals at all. they are inhuman and cold.

I'd love love love a Komodo Dragon or a Hyena one day! I'm always wanting to try to tame the un-tamable. I know no animal is tame etc but you know what I mean

For my wife, it's the love of lizards and their personalities, and the bigger the better.

For me it's the delicacy of the exotic and the challenge of naturalistic design for the vivs.

For both of us, it's the pure love of animals, and plants, along with watching them grow, learning about them, and overall enjoying people's responses to our collection. (some kids think we're a pet store and are always coming over asking questions).

My main thing is being able to teach people about some of these creatures that they would never see otherwise.

Well, my fiance loves animals, but she prefers to see them in their natural habitats, untouched by people, and just doesn't really seem to understand why I want to keep them. She doesn't have a problem with me keeping animals, she just doesn't understand why. And she does like some of them, she just doesn't want to have to take care of them. She really likes my ball python, she thinks its very pretty and loves the way it feels and moves.

But when I mention I want to get another, different snake, she asks why, when I already have a ball python...

Exactly what I get from people, "Why do you want that when you already have this. Its just as good. If you get that one will you get rid of the other?" etc etc
