What else aside from Anubias?

Nice to see you in the planted forums :)

For your lighting, stick with T8/T12/PC until you add co2. T5HO are too much light for non-co2 setups.

Haha, Thanks. I think its just the Season... seems like a lot of people are going "Green" now a days Lol

Thanks for the input on the lights... Its a concern but ive been floored by some of the plants/set ups I see :D

AGREED completely...lighting should ALWAYS be the last upgrade.

No need for gravel at ALL unless you just want it in there. Also you need to aim for about 2 to 2 1/2 depth, again depending on plants. Some plants have very deep roots.

Oh I see. I want the gravel or something to hold down the sand better. I had sand in my 300 and it kept getting sucked into my filter. This time I plan to try with something heavier on top. I guess its just trial and error or what tnak maintenance works for me :D

So its best to go 2-2.5" of sand? Is S grade Color Quarts good to use? Or is it best to go heavier like T grade?

If you think you may go high-tech one day, why not start off with a planted tank substrate? I really like Eco Complete, there's also Flourite, but it's very hard to clean. Eco Complete comes with water in the bag, just dump it in. There's also the ADA soils which are pricey. All these substrates are more expensive, but they look really nice, and have a few minerals that will help your root feeders...

Flourite is hard to clean or Planted Sub is hard in general?

So lets say my tank I have the Plant Sub in hand and I am ready to do the bottom of my tank... If I go with the ADA or any soil that water, I open the bag and arrange it to my sepcs? I dont need to rinse it (not used to doing that Lol)?

I read its best to get 3" deep with some sand on top. I think I am going to get a couple bags of Planted Sub and hunt down some Black T grade Color Quartz to start with

Thanks J, this was helpful as everytime I read something its info so I am getting easily distracted or veered off course Lol.

if you use eco or flourite you should rinse if you dont and put it straight into your tank its going to get super cloudy and takes awhile to clear up. so you want to rinse it well before adding to the tank. if you use ada soil. those you do not rinse and put straight into the tank. its good to have atleast 2 inches so its better for the roots of the plants and also better to plant with a thicker layer. too thin its hard to plant and make the plants stay still and uproots easily. if you use substrates that has no nutrients in them such as pool sand and stuff. you can add fert tabs under the plants. but its better to go with eco flourite ada and other nutrient substrates.

I cant speak for the Flourite product but as for Eco it comes with a clearity pouch.

I would empty the tank completely, leave about 7 inches of water.
Add the eco and arrange however you like. Add plants and other deco.
Fill the tank and add your prime and the pouch provided by Eco.

Now with ADA soil I have heard on many accounts that it raises the ammonia A LOT. It is generally advised to this without fish until the ammonia levels out.

Eco Complete doesn't cloud the water. This is what I did. Cut bag, pour in tank, add water. Presto. Crystal clear water. Flourite was a mess, cloudy water even after washing it for hours.

ADA product will leech ammonia for a few weeks. Can't add fish until the substrate is stabilized.
