What else?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a set up with a Senegal, Ctenopoma, S. Eruptus, ABK, and 12 Congo Tetras. No fin nipping.

Thanks for the responses guys! I'll go check out the primer thread and look for that list...the only problem with going to the riverine sub-forum is it gets very little to no traffic, lol. I think congo tetras would be great for movement as well, how many would you suggest in the 55 and also would they be eated as the bichir and African Brown Knife got bigger?

I would get the leopard bushfish but I'm doing this tank with my brother and he doesn't want an all african oddball tank because he wants some color...thanks again for the help!

I'm sure the ABK would leave them alone provided that it's well fed. As for the Bichir...the Albino Senegals would probably be okay with them for a little while since they seem to be the smallest of the Polys, but they will probably go after them after they feel they're big enough to handle a big meal. I kept my tank over stocked and had 12 Congo Tetras, a ABK, Ctenopoma, and Senegal in a 55g. The Congos in my tank were about 4" and were pretty tall so the 6" Sen left it alone.

that's some good news! I may get a small school (5-6) of the tetras and then 2-3 female cichlids that are compatible....of course one of the smaller species

Leopard bushfish would look nice to that setup. I'm kinda worried about the sene might attack the African butterfly fish when the get to it's max size.

my sen isn't full grown yet but it is 8ish inches and it never even looks at the butterfly fish

And right when I say that...my butterfly fish has gone missing :nilly::nilly::nilly:

I think the ornate got him

Smaller adult bichir species are unpredictable to smaller tank mates even if you think they can't fit in their mouth. The killing usually happens in the dark.

nvm i found him... he managed to jump out of hte tank on my lid but under the canopy and didn't flop back into the tank :(

i sealed all the possible ways out to the carpet... i guess I need to keep them from getting on top of the glass as well. I figured if they got jumped up there they were flop themselves back.

oops

sorry to hear about the bfly man, that's a bummer....

I've decided on a set up for my tank:

1 African Brown Ghost Knife
1 African Butterfly
1 Delhezi Bichir
3 Blue Acara Cichlids (yea, i know they're not african, lol)
6 Congo tetras (for some added movement and color, not concerned about getting picked off in time)

Thanks for all the input and help with this set up guys!

African Brown Ghost Knife? Are you talking xenomystus nigri like in my avatar? Or is it a totally different fish that might interest me?

Hmmm... Apparently can't edit my post even though it says I can, no button. May have found my answer in Apteronotus leptorhynchus, but it's not African, it's South American.

EDIT: Weird, I can edit this one, but not the previous. Missing button shows up on this post.
