What exaclty do overflows do?

My house
ive been looking for a new tank and i see a lot with overflows on them but i don exactly know what ehy do? its primarily for salt water right? im just retarded.lol help me out!
 
they allow water to flow to your sump.... built in overflows are idiot proof...

so if you dont use a sump then they are pretty much usless?
 
you kinda have to have a sump... there is a way to plumb canister filters to the overflows... if you want a sump buy a reef ready tank.... if you want to use canister or HOB filters dont buy a RR tank...
 
alright thanks fr the info. also, where is a good place to buy tanks on the internet? ive seen glass cages and they seam pretty sweet but idk?
 
you want glass tanks or acrylic???
 
glasscages is good for shallow tanks.... i would trust anything over 30" deep......depends on what your really looking for... any lfs that sells perfecto tanks can get there new 6x3x2 tank with starfire front...

perfecto tank is like 1200.... best bet for you is craigs list....
