Sumps are a way to have easier access to your medias (particularly mech and chem) for cleaning, while still having the water flow. They also can house plants, and if setup right, small fish, or inverts that won't mix with your larger fish. They can house huge amounts of bio-media, and easily can be designed to accommodate a wet/dry.

k thanks for the info

I'm wondering why a sump would be needed? Sorry but i'm ignorant to the subject of sumps, i've always just used power filters.

yeah me too

i still think that sumps are superior for bio-media over anything

sumps are AMAZING.. i set up my first one 6 months ago... so far ive cleaned out the lil filter sock 3 times... took about 5 minutes... i have never owned a tank this clear and this stable... sumps are wonderful.. overflows are simple and easy.. even if you have no idea how it work just build one and somehow (as if by magic) it will work and you will go "o.. wait... OOOOOOOO!!!!! I GET IT!!!! o thats so simple... duh..." just like i did..

and sumps are super easy to build.. if theres a homedepot and a dollar store somewhere around you.. you can build a great one for under $60.. the pump will run you anywhere from $50-400 depending on how fancy you want to go.. but even a cheap oversized pump can be made to work without worry...

get the tank.. even if it takes you a few weeks/months to get it up and running.. its worth it

alright thanks a lot. ohh and whats a filter sock?haha

A sump has no direct correlation to how good a bio-media is. A wet/dry sump will have very good bio-capacity, but the media used can have just as important a role as the overall design.

Lets keep this on the top for the newbies.

I'm still a newbie to sumps/wet dry. Is there anyway to quiet the overflows? That constant waterfall is either theraputic or annoying to guests.

nevermind. i see now. durso standpipe...
