Good question

You would think so but I did a thread on it but got no answers. Now let a thread have a over stocked tank and youll get a 100 replies !

a fader is a fish that is one color the turns very dark and then slowly changes to a red-orange-pink color

My question is what causes fading and when can you classify your fish a Fader ?

I could be incorrect, but......

Basically a fader is any FH that has enough red devil lineage that they will turn black (peel) and then become a lighter color. Simplistically.

Jing Kang is an old blood line of FH. They have since been somewhat bred out of the hobby to different strains. I'm still not 100% on ID'ing them, but they typically have smaller nauchal humps and have more of the golden (orange-yellow) to their bodies.

Agree with Pharaoh, only to add that Midas (Amphilophus Citrinellus) has probably been used to produce just as many, if not more faders than Red Devil. (Amphilophus labiatus) The Midas has the shorter, blockier head/face, and typically larger nuchal humps than RD's, so IMO would be more ideal than an RD, but you can see RD traits in many faders as well. Smaller nuchal humps, longer heads, more pointed snout. Both species peel as they mature, and can go through a number of color phases & changes before they reach their mature color/pattern.

I could only guess that your ZZ RD is carrying the fader gene. It will be interesting to see how they progress over time.
