Silicone tubing is a bit more expensive, but much more flexible and stretchable. It will likely fit over those oversize nonstandard Chinese knock-off nipples. Taking some fine sandpaper and chamfering the end of the nipple a bit will also help. It still might not be easy; you should try to get used to that going forward in life...:)

Buying a roll of silicone tubing will likely mean you have invested only slightly more in total than if you had bought good stuff originally...but you "got a deal online"...

I got a deal online. It was something like 2 for 10, so I bought it. The connected to connect to the tubing is almost impossible to fit over. I tried soaking the tube in hot water, buying bigger tubing, NOTHING WORKS!!!
Lame, I guess that's the gamble, mine actually came with a generous amount of standard air-line tubing which worked fine. Most of the writing on the box is Chinese but mine say Super Biochemical Sponge Filter xy 280.

What I do with my sponges is put a small discard a stone in there as I have had bad experiences with the connection point getting mineralized and blocking air flow

Having worked with (in a professional capacity) a lot of brands I'm hooked on Oase as far as canisters go.
Very large (talking FX6) and very small canisters are an exception (Oase doesn't have one in the fx6 size range and their small ones aren't manufactured by them) are an exception, but their biomaster series is amazing. Literally the only weak point they have is the flow rate on the larger sizes but it's still enough to work with. Well worth the price IMO.

...that being said, sumps are the way to go for large tanks.
