What filter for 50 gal marine?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so I have the marine tank almost completely set up, all I am waiting for is my 2nd koralia, which should be coming today, and much better lighting for when I get corals.

I'm adding some pics of the new setup including the custom made sump for the tank, and homemade stand, and unfortunately what I believe is cyano growing on the tank already :/ . Tank has been setup for 3 weeks now, only one day with the new sump filter, but yes its starting cyano already :?

Good luck...really fine sand gets compacted with waste...end result...cyano. Dealt with this in my 75g reef until I tore down the whole thing and got the crappy sugar sand out of my tank. Get yourself some aragonite right now. Thats my advice, and then watch your phosphates and keep flow up.

Oh...and if you have to get a canister filter. Eheim. Its mainly biological. And the eheim wet dry would not be a bad choice, as long as maintenance was kept up.

Thx for the reply, i definitely dont want to tear the whole thing down and get different sand, i spent enough on the sand in there. There has to be a better option with the live sand I put in there.

Also, no more need for a canister filter anymore :) I went the expensive route and had a custom sump/refugium built for me :) I love it, now I just need to add some live rock and macro algae to the refugium and get my protein skimmer hooked up
