What Filter for a 1000g Pond??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what type of pump? what type of return? how big should the filter be? what about a uv light?

I don't have a clue

If you buy a filter, make sure to buy one that is rated for 2000-3000G since over time they get clogged with leaves, algae, particulate, etc and if you don't want to be cleaning your filter every week but rather one a month, then buy larger than what is needed.

If you decide to build your own, here is a filter I built for a 600G pond that has worked great for years. Easy to follow directions:

okay thanks for that link.

So essentially it goes from a regular filter/pump with UV light up to the home made chamber and returns back to the pond?

Do I just buy an out of box filter kit then? If so any suggestions? Bearing in mind I am in the UK?

I can't have bottom drains or anything fancy, it'll just need to be something that sits at the bottom of the pond. The maximum height where the filters would sit would only be 2ft above the pond, so there's a maximum head height of 4ft.

Thanks in advance

I would recommend a Messner pump in the UK:

Go with either the Eco-X 10000 Plus (3000L/hr at 1m) or the Eco-X 15000 Plus (6900L/hr at 1m).

found the prices! they are £370 for the cheapest.

We were hoping to do the whole setup for less than that!

what size should the main filter box be? ie. how many litres of biomedia is required? Bearing in mind it will be a wet/dry setup.

what about pond matrix?

2 large plastic garbage cans. first can is settle can. put a valve in bottom to drain sludge. put a divider in top half and place a drain out to second barrel 3/4 to way up on oppisite side of intake. You can put some type of bio media under the drain to stop anything to float up and clog drain like a cuttable furnace filter, something easy to remove and clean from time to time. Second can is your biofilter. Fill it just like on your fish tank. Used it on my first pond and worked well. Just plumb it with a bypass so the pump will pump back to the pond while you clean the filters and drain the sludge out of the first can.other wise build another small box and put gravel in it and plant it with any local water plants or bog plants that will act as your filter.
