Canisters are not affected by head because they are closed systems
Any reduction in flow from advertised rates is due to media friction
also you are making up numbers

Took the numbers right off the side of the xp3 and xp2 boxes ( fine print). All other numbers I got from online sources including prices.

You are right about the head though. It's because of the media and some 10' of tubing involved in the chain. Head was a the wrong term. The length if tubing is the right one. Wrong terminology, same concept since it's a loss of flow either way.

Also for the EHIEM fanbois
your 2215 is rated for a 93g at 164 gph
I'd say at 164gph that filter is only good for a 30gal tank amirite

True.....which I believe was the reason for the thread to begin with, op needs more filtration and is aware

And they have a 2217 not a 2215;)

I have used the Penn Plax Cascade filters for over a year. They are a great budget filter. I have had a 1000 on a 65g and it was way to small. It only worked on a lightly stocked tank. I have 2 of the 1500's on my 120g and this has been just right on a medium stocked tank with frequent water changes.

If I had a $120 budget I would look for an on-line sale of the 1500 with free shipping and some sort of coupon. You should be able to come pretty close to your budget price and get a much more substantial filter.

i bought 2 used xp4's in perfect running condition, both for under $120 each. check craigslist, ebay and the classifieds here. good luck! xp filters are great and cheap, lots of reviews here.

i dont know why you should automatically throw out cascade. theyre great filters for a great budget. a cascade 1500 will work very well, as long as you can have patience to wait for a little more $...also. i dont know why you would skip a beat on an AC110, theyre amazing. super quiet, and hold a boatload of media for an HOB. and can cycle that tank a couple times over by itself..with an AC110 and your 2217, you should be alright.. or save your money, and go bigger..

btw, heres a cascade 1500 for 139.99

Well i love the Eheim, its so quiet, but it doesnt seem to have a high flow rate. I just want another filter so that my filtration will be so good, that i wont have any problems being overstocked. Im willing to go to about $150-160 now.

My vote is for rena. Never trying fluval again myself. Heard great things about marineland canisters, but I have never tried them since they cost a lot in my area. I do use marineland HOB and I do like them compared to ACs

When it comes down to it, pick the canister you like best :)
