I've never used a sand filter. Do you have any links or web sites I could check out?I use 55g barrel with about 20L of K1 airated, 100lb sand filter, 900w titanium heater plus a 500w heater set lower.

I backflush about 150g every 2-3 weeks. It takes about 1 minute and I refill with a 500g tote I have with aged waterHow often did you back flush the sand filter?
Not really I just setup a Hayward pro series s180t. You need a rather large tank 500g and up. I have 2 2" intakes from the aquarium and 4 1" returns and the flow is pretty largeI've never used a sand filter. Do you have any links or web sites I could check out?

Im old school I would do tons and tons of bio balls, sponges and ceramic rings. People use pot scrubbers as an alternatives. I would diy my own sump and make sections for he pups. It's just like a tank lol I keep fry in my sump all the time. Just make a diagram what you need in there like a pump, heaters, baffles, plants possibly whatever your thinking.
Never had rays but I've had two 3 feet arowanas 4 foot red tail catfish and many other oddball fish with my setup. I had such a heavy bio load and all was well so I'm sure rays would be the same. How long have you been keeping rays using "old school" methods? How dense is the stocking on these systems?
When I mixed "old school" filtration and rays I learned it didn't work very well.....
I don't do sock too much cleaning and then you have to do laundry lolWhat about pre-filter? Filter floss or sock?
