What filtration should I get?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
after spending in excess of £250 ($500) on plumbing, ( im not exagerating i have receipts) breakdown is
pvc pipe,
bulkheads,
pvc pipe cutter,
plumbers mate,
teflon tape,
pvc glue,
various connectors to make a durso standpipe
various connectors to plumb from the tank to the sump and from the pump to the tank. not mentioning cost of the pump (£70 ish for a nice quiet one)

im not sure if connectors are cheaper in the US but in UK talking £5 each approx, ball valve cost £45!!

i feel in a good postion to say go FX5 all the way!!!

my plumbing has been a nightmare!,

leaking bulkheads initially took a couple of tries until I realised the teflon tape they have given me was shocking and basically sticky backed tin foil so the water would get in behind the tape and have a slow drip.

I have a lot of gurgling which i have got to a minimum by using flex hose, not too many bends, changing from a wet dry, to fully submerged, changing the angle the the overflow pipe enters the sump.... running airline halfway down the durso standpipe hole (all tricks i have picked up from here).

but its still noisy, i can live with it, but when you turn it off you realise how noisy it is. this is in my living room and the mrs isnt too tolerant, she knows its tough lol.

i went this way because a sump does have its benefits,

heater out of the tank and room for more media being the main points i wanted.

but the noise is still enough for me to be looking for a cheap FX5. I dont think mine is noiser than other sump systems and the noise is as much the gurgling as it is the pump.

im aware im going on a bit. so ill say go for a second hand FX5 and be done with it.

my secondhand tank was already drilled this way so i thought id give it a go, im glad i did but external filters are much simpler. just my two cents,.

Silent!! thats the thing. whlist i was setting up mine, my friend setup a 10ft x 2ft baolong tank he got as a bargain, (gorgeous) See my other posts for pics, got it for £250 with two FX5's and you can barely hear a thing!

i think mine isnt too bad until i go around there.

I agree with the above posts, you won't go wrong with a FX5 and two AC110s

My FX5 is very quite, I love it

I'm a big fan of the Fx5. Can't go wrong. For a 180, I would also add an AC110 or two.

+1

^^^^this. my plumbing for a sump has cost me a small fortune, a simple 1" 90 degree bend costs about £6 (~$10). it soon adds up. however, i am led to believe that sumps are worth it in the long run no matter how much trouble they are to get set up.
