after spending in excess of £250 ($500) on plumbing, ( im not exagerating i have receipts) breakdown is
pvc pipe,
bulkheads,
pvc pipe cutter,
plumbers mate,
teflon tape,
pvc glue,
various connectors to make a durso standpipe
various connectors to plumb from the tank to the sump and from the pump to the tank. not mentioning cost of the pump (£70 ish for a nice quiet one)

im not sure if connectors are cheaper in the US but in UK talking £5 each approx, ball valve cost £45!!

i feel in a good postion to say go FX5 all the way!!!

my plumbing has been a nightmare!,

leaking bulkheads initially took a couple of tries until I realised the teflon tape they have given me was shocking and basically sticky backed tin foil so the water would get in behind the tape and have a slow drip.

I have a lot of gurgling which i have got to a minimum by using flex hose, not too many bends, changing from a wet dry, to fully submerged, changing the angle the the overflow pipe enters the sump.... running airline halfway down the durso standpipe hole (all tricks i have picked up from here).

but its still noisy, i can live with it, but when you turn it off you realise how noisy it is. this is in my living room and the mrs isnt too tolerant, she knows its tough lol.

i went this way because a sump does have its benefits,

heater out of the tank and room for more media being the main points i wanted.

but the noise is still enough for me to be looking for a cheap FX5. I dont think mine is noiser than other sump systems and the noise is as much the gurgling as it is the pump.

im aware im going on a bit. so ill say go for a second hand FX5 and be done with it.

my secondhand tank was already drilled this way so i thought id give it a go, im glad i did but external filters are much simpler. just my two cents,.
sweet jesus was the valve made of gold ?
1.5 inch ball valve on ebay 6 quid
bulkheads will cost about the same
when i added a valve to my pond filter i used a bulkhead that used silicon to seal it and they worked pretty well

Will a combo of fluval 204, ehiem 2215 and my cascade 1000 work?

if you have those filters, then yes that should work for tank that is not over stocked. you are turning the tank about 4 times if i remember the math right. alot of people say to turn the tank 5 to 10 times depending on your stocking level. what is the stock of the tank?

Just one fish.

I just put this system in and its simple and works great. my tank is clean and i dont have to clean it very much. On top of that, unlike a sump system i cant overflow into my house :D

It really depends on what you plan on stocking. Big messy fish, need a lot of mechanical filtration.A pair of big canisters,or a sump would be best.

If you plan on keeping smaller community fish,a descent size canister along with a HOB or 2 would work.

o.O

what is that?

Its a NU-Clear canister filter with 18 sf of pleat. Its great and i would recommend it. Here is a link if you want to check it out. It says 600 gal pond or 90 gal tank but you can use it for a much larger
