Along with good filtration should be large, regular water changes. The water changes alone would enable one to use almost any kind of filtration.
I do like the hydrosponges, though. Very easy to clean and captures loads of, uh, stuff. They are an excellent mechanical and biological filter, probably the best for $/performance (imho). I stack 2 of them and put a maxijet 1200 on top. This creates good flow, too.
I also have a Rena XP4 canister filter on the tank.
