What fish can be kept with a Gar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
there's really tonnes of info on this exact topic if one would just use the search tool

Silver or green aro would be a better choice than a jardini; jars are more aggressive. Otherwise bichirs are good tankmates for gar...and I keep mine with peaceful cichlids (severum, chocolate) but others will tell you "no cichlids at all".

boisterous fish like jars and barras are generally not good with gar.
more so the jars since they are known to be very aggressive.
ive done barras and gars together though.
only once did i have an accident which was caused my a tankmate.

wow thanks for the info, i thought the jar has the same aggression as a green arrow would greens b ok with the Gar? not a big fan of the silver cos when they grow up they look kinda ugly haha. If anything i would wnat to have 3 large silvers in a tank, but then again i known they would fight with each other. Anyone else had big silvers in one tank without any problems? my friend has 5 of them in one tank without any problems.

aros generally dont make good tankmates for gars.
you can comm aros.
it just depends on the individual fishes.
ive seen 2 aros commed.
ive seen tens of aros commed as well.
ive seen it go smoothly and wrong.
you have to try to find out.

Wouldn't recommend a barra, i'm selling mine as the gar freaks out at feeding time due to the speed of the mundi. He's already jumped twice and rarely eats since the addition of the mundi (both fish are around 14")

Aros would work, a lot of the guys on this forum have done it.

Other good fish would be:

Bichirs: These would do great with Gar would work great as they are part of the same Superorder.

Lungfish (South American and Australian only): They're not aggro as the Afros and would work well as an interesting bottomdwelling tankmate for the Gars. Would also work with the Bichirs.

Aros: Provided you don't have an agressive aro or an agressive Gar, they should be fine.

Catfish: Depends on what kind. Avoid any plecos prone to slimecoat sucking. Certain pimelodids, doradids, and giraffe cats may work.

Spiny Eels: These guys may be somewhat a challenge to get off of worms, but they're rather peaceful fish. Aim for the larger ones such as Fire and Tire Track.

My two cents. Hope this helped. (Am completely uncertain regarding availability and price in AUS).

At our facility we kept, Alligator Gar, Needlenose Gar, Florida Gar, Snook, Tarpon, Snapper, pacu and tilapia all in with our manatees. We haven't had any issues.
