Hi All,

Recently I got a fish but don't know what it is! It's now around 2.5" in size, white body with black horizontal stripes that go till the fins and doesn't seem to like cichlid pellets..... the LFS guy told me it's name is 'indian sugeon fish'/'surgeon major'.... but couldn't find any info on the internet by that name. I'm posting a few images for reference. It's on the right hand bottom corner and left hand bottom corner in the images. It would be great if somebody could identify the fish for me.
Oh.... the LFS guy kind of warned me of the aggressiveness of the species when it grows up!

Thanks...

if it is the fish on the bottom, it is a target fish, or Therapon jarbua

Yep, definitely a target fish. They are really a brackish water fish and I can't recall ever seeing one do really well in freshwater. Still a cool fish and one of my favorites.

Surgeon major, maybe he meant Sergeant Major....EIther way way, it is a dither or target fish...

love the rock in your tank! what a mix of fish you have there!

Definitely a therapon jarbua, they get to around 15" and do best with at least a little salt, though they are found wild in some FW areas.

Thanks Everybody!.... that's the fish I got. But very little info on it on the net.... does anyone know how big it gets n is it aggressive?!

@navygirl76> thanks.... the rockwork is actually meant for exclusive rift lake cichlids... but i got tempted n kept some other species too!! :p

Thanks Guppy. I do add a bit of salt when I do water change.... but may be when it grows a little bigger, I'll need to move it to a brackish setup.

Btw the tongue wagging in the previous reply was a typo error..... wanted something else!!! (m technologically challenged!)

never seen them in person or online for that matter before. Good to see you got a "rare" fish. its "rare" to me because i have never seen or heard of it. He/She looks really cool, please keep us all updated on the growth and health of this...therapon jarbua.
