It is a American Gizzard shad. We catch these on the river. Not intently, but while bass fishing I've snagged one of these and got my hopes up on huge fish to see this thing come thru the water side ways. These get pretty big about 5lbs and are great bait.
 
it looks like the same fish we have here called a dace or pond shiner. we used to catch them alot in the spring on worms and then take the smaller ones and use them for pickeral or pike bait. they also work good for catching striped bass when they come up the river to spawn

Nope, two totally different fish.

The OP's fish is definately a Gizzard Shad. They're almost impossible to fish for on hook and line, since they are strictly filter feeders.

the only you catch these guys is buy snagging or netting.
