Ok so I just got a 55 gallon freshwater tank and I am looking to stock the tank, I want a fish that doesn’t take up much space, seeing as I would like it to be fine with tank mates, but at the same time I would like a relatively large fish (around 2-3 inches) that is aggressive enough to eat feeder fish. The fish would also not be aggressive enough to want to kill tankmates. I don’t know if this magical fish exists, but if it does I would love for someone to inform me, thanks!

Puffer maybe?

That’s a pretty tall order. Does it have to eat feeder fish? Are you breeding the feeders? Or is it just for entertainment?

I think a small puffer fits your list. Except you’d be feeding it snails and shrimp for live food instead of fish.

I would agree with MrsE88. A puffer sounds like what you are looking for. They’ll hunt down snails and other things like crayfish that are in their tank. They also leave other fish alone for the most part. My daughter loves her puffers and enjoys watching them hunt down the snails.

I’m not breeding the feeders, and feeding it feeder fish is not that important, but what tank mates could it have?

2-3 inches? thats more of a feeder sized fish itself imo.

some fish that are aggressive and would fit your tank are convicts, firemouth, salvinis, various species of cichlasoma...these all max out around 6-7" though and are not admittedly great with tankmates.

a dwarf pike would also fit your tank and most definitely hunt smaller fish.

I'd go with the grouping of Firemouth suggestion. A mid-sized, colorful cichlid, and feed it juvenile guppies or mollies.

I think you could go with four juvenile FM' s. I keep four in my 120 along with various other cichlids, large Tetras and Loaches.
Might stock a school of 6x - 8x - Buenos Aires tetras and a Bristlenose Pleco, maybe a few Cory Cats. That should just about max out a 55 gal.
