What fish should I get?

I think you could go with four juvenile FM' s. I keep four in my 120 along with various other cichlids, large Tetras and Loaches.
Might stock a school of 6x - 8x - Buenos Aires tetras and a Bristlenose Pleco, maybe a few Cory Cats. That should just about max out a 55 gal.

So 4 firemouths, 6 BA tetras, and a Brostlenose pleco? Sounds good to me, anybody else have any good tankmates?

Not a bad stocking. One thing to keep in mind, is you might want to go all-male, or all-female, as a pair might kill the others if it forms. It might not, but at the very least it would probably stake out half the tank and keep the others out.
The 4 FM's, BA tetras, and BN pleco sounds about full to me.
Worth mentioning, that there are other species of thoricthys or cryptoheros/amatitlania that would work. T. Pasiones, T. aureus, or cryptoheros nanolutes, to name a few. Same idea, small group in the 55.

you might consider some livebearers vs. tetras. a dozen or so mollies or swordtails. theyre central/north american like the firemouth whereas tetras are predominantly south american fish.
