What fish to use for cycling?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use Zebra Danio's, they are cheap fast and easy. The kids love em, the cats love em, and the Polyp. Delhizi will get to love them last...

I never really use fish. I just get some ammonia and put it into my tank. Much cheaper for me. But most people I know just throw an uncooked shrimp in the tank.

Danios as mentioned are cheap, hardy, and good feeders. Other very hardy fish that you might want to keep after cycling are labryinth fish like some gouramis, wild bettas, paradisefish, combtails, and climbing perch, clarius catfish, and swampeels will work. I have also used dojos, callichthys catfish, and even 4-5" sunfish.

You should really try to get your hands on some old filter media or something, because it's really unhealthy for fish to use them to kick-start a cycle.

 when you think about it, those poor little fish..... Their in the tank feeling crappy while its cycling, slowly becoming happier and happier as the water conditions improve then one day when life couldn't be better a pair of pbass appear from nowhere:WHOA:

I do seed the new filter with sludge from a healthy one and add fish slowly, it takes longer to get to your prefered stocking level but the cycling never gets extreme and you don't lose fish
