what fish wont eat convict fry?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
otocinclus, maybe.
The problem is anything that probably wouldn’t eat the fry will be taken out by the parents.

Yes you are going to have to remove the fry regardless of tankmates if you want to raise them as feeders, otherwise the parents will "clean the slate" for the next set of fry. In the wild they would assume there is something wrong with fry that stick around for too long, and the energy better used to prepare them for next batch. Cold world!

Roseline sharks or Dennison's barbs have very small mouths and I have kept them with fish 1/10 their length. They would probably eat newly freeswimming fry, but once they get to about 1 cm or 3/8" size they'll ignore them.

In my experience, tetras are like small piranhas and are pretty predatory. Take a close up look at their mouths and you'll see what I am talking about.

Agreed a mid sized or any tetra would gobble up those fry if given the chance. But in my tanks, (and I keep angels, eggs are higher in the tank) the angels will protect the fry from the tetras, the tetras still try (along with all the other fish) but are not able to actually get at the nest. I also get free-swimmers in my 90g with 7 BN plecos.

That said if I want to raise the fry to any size, I will move them to a nursery tank. I haven't seen the fry make it past 1.5 weeks in a community tank.
