What fish would you like to see gone from petco?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We don't have petco here but a similar chain called pet barn. The fish section is usually a disgrace.
Really, there's no reason a big box store can't have any fish in stock, if they hired good knowledgeable staff who actually cared and took care of their stock properly they could easily become just as good as any LFS.
Their customers generally seem new to the hobby but with some guidance they can become experienced and start a whole new generation of fshkeeepers.
It's not the fact they sell any type offsh that's the proble, it's because staff who don't have a clue are selling the,to customers who also don't have a clue

I just think if the store is going to sell larger fish like oscars, plecos, large marine Angels and tangs, they need to have a tank for sale in the store that can house them adequately. The largest tanks I see at petco are in the 50-60 gallon range. As an employee you're pretty much set up to point at these inadequate tanks when asked which tank is needed for these fish.

Petsmart is the one with the big tanks. They always have 75 - 150s in there, usually for great prices too.

I would agree but it seems limited to certain petsmarts, and I would also say that in the past few years the bigger tanks are few and far between. I'll also point out that most if not all of the larger tanks are undrillable and therefore inadequate for a sump setup which is preferred for large fish systems.

They offer larger tanks online, or at least they used to, up to 300 gallon clear for life tanks. I think it'd be great if they at least advertised this option more in the stores.

I’ve been at my local petco and heard horrible advice being give on fish care.
I agree with the six inch without special order. One of them near me sell arrowanas, tiger shovel nose and red tail cats as well.
I think they need to invest a TON more on the employees knowledge. They shouldn’t be allowed to give advice when they are clueless themselves.

Lol There was a guy at petsmart insisting that piranhas were saltwater. He asked me what type I had and I said red belly. Who knew, those are the only actually freshwater piranha :screwy:

Anyway he advised that the convict cichlids I was getting as tankmates weren’t good and I should get a jack dempsey instead (actually a Texas). Probably lasted longer than the cons would have. This part was me being stupid though lol.

This guy convinced my clueless friend to get 4 Oscars in his 30-gallon tank. I went there a month ago and I was horrified. We spent the rest of the day yelling at the phone. They refunded him, and gave him a Bala Shark, saying it is really pretty and eats flakes. By now, I was pissed, and I just told him to come with me the next day to pick out something that is pretty and eats flakes. We went to pet zone, for fear of ich. He then insisted on getting cichlids, because he liked the color, and he switched the food. I think he got a small cichlid community tank, but I don't remember the exact species. I remember he got at least one yellow lab.
