most feeder gold fish are already dead they just don't know it yet.:D

Anyhow what type filtration will you be using? If you have a similar type filter from another tank you can seed it with some media from that filter, but I would still add the raw uncooked shrimp. with a tank this size it will take some time, but be patient and do it right.

There is nothing worse than having to deal with an uncycled tank full of valuable fish.

Fluval fx5 and a sponge filter.

The water wont really add anything, dont worry about it.
If you have an established filter, you have an established tank.

Exactly!

I'm taking all the media and fish from my mates tank tomorrow and transfering it all to my filter and tank... shouldn't have a problem.

Plain ammonia cycle is good and is the method I've used in the past. I add 3 drops of ammonia per fish I plan to start the tank up with per day. Since this is a monsterfishkeeper site maybe the drops of ammonia should be increased. Start your canister filter and sponge filters. Seed tank with bio-spira. You need to be patient as your ammonia levels will be through the roof. Eventually your bacteria will be able to catch up the the dosage of ammonia you're giving them and it should be undectable. When you reach that point, do 90% WC put in new pre-treated water and add fish.
