just out of curiosity, i am wondering what types of pikes fit the following criteria:

1- don't get over 6-8"
2- are really colorful
3- not ultra aggressive

does anything actually fall into this category aside from the dwarf pikes? i've seen some spectacular red pikes here and i find myself very tempted, but need to know a lot more than what i currently do.

any thoughts or recommendations?

wow, thats a tuff call....Saxatillis pikes fit that, well, kind of. Not the size, they can get up to about 10 inches, but some get to 12 and others only 7 inches. Cr. Saxatillis is actually a very nicely colored and attractive pike, most of these species are not overly aggressive, like say a Red Devil but they can be mean. Usually they are not to bad though but they will defend themselves, there actually really good at 'countering' when challenged. Check out this site for sizes and information, plus pictures

thanks for all the tips and the link.
not to be superficial, but is there anything that fits the above bill that is red? there's something about red pikes that's just freakin awesome :D

Hey Ewok, the real deep reds are in the Lugabris family usually, but there are a lot of Saxatillis species such as the cren. species Saxatillis itself, but that gets to about 12 inches. there are also others in that sax family that get red and nice spangling to them....such as Crenicichla anthurus, Crenicichla menezesi and others alont those lines, I would really stick with Crencichla Saxatillis, it gets very red for a sax pike, has nice spangling, obtains 10-12 inches though which is the only thing that may hold you back on that....

A lot of the female Sax group pikes get a nice pinkish hue to their stomachs with size
