What Foam for my Sump? Ditch the filter socks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can use filter socks w/ that sump.

1. socks will be used in the first chamber to the left.
2. remove that baffle w/ the black silicone( this will allow water flow to all the submerge media that will replace the sand)
You have the option of using k1 fluidize media in that area and place a jap mat in the slot that flows to the next chamber to prevent the k1 to flow away.
3. Add more submerged media in the next section
4. last section will be your heaters and return pump.

Problem solved. your welcome

45 ppi foam is not polishing.

this is 45 ppi foam next to 100 micron mesh. from what I've seen, polishing is considered to be around 5-10 micron filter material.

you're not going to get clear water at all with just foam. You're going to need micron rated material, whether its socks, or some flat pieces you configure to fit in there somehow. I just don't think you'll be happy with foam by itself...

as mentioned I can't use filter socks as the solid pipes run submerged. There is no space to move them in or out. why can't someone make a 50 micron square sheet that just drops in where the foam would sit?

a bit like a square cartridge for instance? just remove, spray and fit back in?

Can you post pics of of how the return/solid pipes fit into the tank? I'm sure you can make your own diy inlet.

Go to dudadiesel.com and click on filters and accessories then click filter media sheets. You can buy large sheets and cut them to size. I do this for secondary 25 micron filtering after my socks but it would work for you in place of socks. You could try 50 micron but it might clog fast. I'd get 50 and 100 and see which works best for you...

I only use paint strainer bags folded over a few times on top of my sump and my water is extremely clear. I would say that unless you're really bored and patient, you don't need filter socks of such fine mesh. But if you really want invisible water, go for it!
