What got you into polys

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have always been attracted to eel and snake-like fish. When I started back up in the hobby again as an adult (had small tanks when I was a kid) with a 30 gallon tank, the first fish on my wish list were kuhli loaches. :)

We then moved and I eventually got a 65 gallon tank. Again, got kuhli loaches, and another favorite addition - gobies! I set up a pretty cool mostly SA community tank that I loved for a long time. (Note, the kuhlis and gobies were one of the only fish not from SA hahaha) Every time I went to a LFS and there were rope fish, I would stare and stare at them. I wanted them soooo badly. But, thanks to the internet and researching, I knew they'd eat most of my smaller tetras.

Finally I started to get bored with the SA community. I wanted fish with more character, but most larger cichlids were out with my 3 foot long tank. So I started a slow transition by buying a baby Ctenopoma, knowing that at some point he'd get large enough to eat the tetras. And over time, he did, so I was forced into getting rid of any small fish. It was at that point that I started looking into getting my rope fish and I found out about the polys here on MFK. I had NO idea about them before that. I research fish a lot online but since my tank was smaller I think I was always looking up smaller fish.

This forum was my main downfall. :D

I am incredibly happy now to have my snake fish and my dragon/dinosaur fish. <3

1)The polka dots on the ornate bichir drew me in and how weird looking they are compared to other fish. 2) bought one.
3) It was so personable, inquisitive, and hilarious. Would make me laugh and smile. Come up to greet me and flap the pec fins frantically. Hide/Hang from in weird things, Scoot/Swim around. I LOVE HOW THEY SWIM.
4) wanted to learn more about bichirs. Found MFK and the poly section.
5) Became Obsessed.
