From reading all the posts it seems I will need about 1200 GPH or more for my tank.

Works for me.

i just know that i run close to 2000 gph in my 55 gallon

30+ gallons a minute is nuts in a 55.
Sorry, but that`s how I feel about it.
Guess it works for you.

Yeah well i plan on in the future getting a much bigger tank and might end up doing a small mouth bass setup or something like that so i'll need the gph later on just figured its better to over filter than under filter lol.

So.. I think this is what it has come down to.

1. 1200-1500 GPH for the sump.
2. multiple outlets from the sump to the tank for water movement
3. 1 or 2 marineland maxi-jet 1200 powerhead for extra water movement to get waste into sump. I do not think I will need a koralia pump as it is for making waves and not moving water. The marineland pump is cheaper and more reliable.

Next steps are to build the siphon overflow and test it out with new pump/sump.

Thanks all for the input.

Good plan, except you might give Hydor another look.
Not just for setting up a wavemaker, but are used all over to help move debris in tanks.
As far as reliability, these are hard to beat.
I really like the "shotgun" way they move water as opposed to the more focused way the standard powerhead works.
Anyway, you got a good grip on your tank.
Good luck.

You want to look at the Hydor Koralia Evolution Ciculation Pump they have a really nice wide flow which makes the gph rating misleading. I have the old style rated for 400gph on my 75 and i really wish i had gone a size up up. It's high flow but really wide, and silent!

Have you tried pulling them out for feedings? I used to keep a 10G running and have them eat and poop in their before returning home. Also with the powerheads, try aiming them low and have them push water the length of the tank. I find it pushes all the waste into the center of the tank.

Good luck!
