I like the gymnos a lot. My LFS has some el nortes and I'd love to keep them, but my tanks sit in the living room and I don't know how to simulate a cool down period. Any tips on this from anybody?

just keep the tank unheated. i keep my apartment a bit cooler to save $$ anways so with my apartment set at 70F the gymno tank is right around that. well see how warm it gets in the summer, prolly the mid 80s

how many serpae tetras and buenos aires?

I would do red/blue colombian tetras, and bleeding hearts. I think they look awesome (like a small pretty piranha), and they get bigger so that the cichlids won't make dinner out of them.

I added 10 black phantoms about 1-1.5 inches in with my 6" and 4" green flier's and they were gone the next day. Vanished without a trace. I know the ameca splendens didn't get them, or the BN pleco.

thanks. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with this tank. I just finished cycling and I was headed out of town when I noticed the outflow nozzle on my eheim was cracked. I tried to epoxy it, but it broke off anyway. I'm out of town now and I don't know what I'm gonna do when I get back. I ordered a replacement part, but I guess I'll have to cycle all over again!

any help for me?

I'd go for a group serpae over buenos aires cuz the serpae stay smaller so you'll have more contrast in terms of fish size. I'd try about a half dozen and see how that looks and then maybe and another 6 more. I personally have danios, harliquin rasboras, and white clouds in with my gymnos with no problems.

ok, i think i will try to talk my girlfriend in to getting serpae, thanks for all the help. this is what the stocking is going to be(hopefully i have to talk her in to it, i told her its her tank but i get to put the oblongums in there):
pair oblongums
3 blue neons
12+ serpae

Yes, 12 serpae will be ok, and there will be no problem with keeping the tank unheated, if you like you can add some apistogramma borelli or laetacara dorsigera to complete the tank with small cichlids of the area

I agree.do the blue neons and just some other schoolers. The Norte's tend to be a bit nippy.I had a bunch together, mostly males and of course, they compete to see who's the head honcho. The Blue Neon Valentines were very peaceful and kinda just cruised around, not to mention were a lot nicer in appearance~ color wise. The Norte were very nice also but they kinda compete with each other.I lost 2 maybe 3 to aggression. The neons every other fish just accepted and left alone. But with all that being said, all fish are a different fish.No matter what, you will most likely get one bully in a bunch but you have to hope the bully just never goes too far.Everyone has an Alpha in their tank-period.
