I have a 150 gallon tank with 17 electric yellows (2-3 inches in size, 3 holding right now), 12 acei's that are ranging from 2-3.5 inches, and 10 blue dophins that are 1-1.5 inches big. I just did my twice weekly 50% water change last night, and tonight when I got home I noticed this guy on the bottom of the tank. 1 Eye was gone, and it looks like he suffered considerable fin damage. Mouth wide open... Did he get into a fight and lost? This is the first acei I lost in the past few months so I thought everyone was getting along fine.

What do you think happened? (this guy below was on the bigger end of fish in the tank, probably 4th or 5th biggest out of the 13 acei)

He might have been on his way out anyway. If it was sick and just kind of floating around, he would definitely get picked on. I've seen it happen with other fish: when one shows weakness, the rest pounce!

I would keep an eye on the others to make sure there is no outbreak of any kind of disease that might have affected this one.

Good luck!

All of them look very healthy to me.. but what do I know, I just started getting into fish keeping. Thanks, I'll be on the lookout though.

Looks like survival of the fittest to me! Who knows with these things and why...unless he was sick before I doubt that he got stuck on a filter intake....even if that was the case...it wouldnt have killed him...just injured and then his tank mates took care of the rest! Sorry for your loss.

same thing happened to mine. one day was swiming around happy. next morning found her dead. survival of the fittest unfortunately. good luck with ur fish and keep us updated

Is there any way that he could have gotten stuck in the filter inlet?

No... he was lying in the opening of one of the rock formations when I saw him

I like survival of the fittest.. it's what life's all about. I don't mind the loss at all, I kinda feel bad for him but thats life. Not all of them are going to make it. That was my reasoning for overstocking as babies so that when they grow older the weak will have died off by then.

Do you condition your water before putting in or just fill and add chems? 50% twice a week could've stressed it too far, and then the rest picked it off afterwards.
