What happens to confiscated Asians?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not sure about the Aros, but I had Killie eggs shipped in from Germany that the Department of Agriculture destroyed. I think it was a case of mistaken identity though, think they saw the eggs and thought they were seeds..........

I think they are released into local lakes and rivers. LOL

ahhaa! Knew you couldn't resist!! LOL. No actually it's a mixture of all of the above. Sadly, sometimes animals really are destroyed once seized, other times, efforts are made to find housing for them in public aquariums, but frustratingly enough, though there are regs. and protocols, sometimes all that is overlooked and I have known some to allow the animal to die so that the "extra work" associated with relocating and housing the animal could be skipped. Sometimes, its a matter of who handles the case and who they are connected with which determines the fate of the animal.

Theres an article in this months tfh about someone in new york that took in some confiscated aros and kept them till the case was closed, didnt say what fandw did withthem after that though

If it's a fish that is endangered chances are they are attempted to find a home with aquariums, and if the fish poses a threat to natural wildlife, then they would be destroyed

Almost any Asian arowana you see at a zoo or aq in the US has been snagged by USF&W.
We have no problem getting them b/c of idiots constantly sneaking them in. It's one of those fish I was talking about in the "Black Tip Shark" thread. They get passed around like crazy b/c nobody really wants them nor plans on getting them in. Any place that does have them have special permits to keep them.

None are ever killed intentionally. Some do die in the shipping process. Most smugglers don't take the time to pack things well.

Some of these are old, but still makes for interesting reading. Yeah, it doesn't pay to get your hands or attempt to get an asian arowana.

Only best course of action is to hope that USFWS will amend the regulation and allow the import of asian aro's with the micro chip tag.
Or just get an jardini, which is pretty close as one can get to having an asian aro in the US.

:D
