What has changed in the hobby over the last decade?

For me it's information and how easy it is to access it. I've only been back in the hobby about 6 years after a long while away from it. Compared to now, I often wonder how the hell I got by back then. Books from the library or what the guys at the LFS told me were my main source of information. Now you've got more info, about any fish related subject you can think of, at the touch of a button.

Of course equipment's changed too but being a strong advocate of the KISS method of fishkeeping, Keep It Simple Stupid, I don't really go for fancy stuff, my set ups are pretty basic.

Welcome back to the hobby.

In the last decade, I'd say not so much, but if you went back 2 decades it was completely different. No websites to learn about fish, you had to be a member of your local community clubs etc. to get rare fish and advice. Most of my learning I did in books, which were bulky and expensive, and became outdated in a couple years with the taxonomic changes. DNA tracing for taxonomic purposes is a huge recent advancement, back then we classified fish based on observable features. Which is why there are so many old obsolete cichlid names like amphilophus festae, etc.

The addition of DC variable speed pumps and Magnetic driven power heads with everything being WiFi enabled including lights and controllable thru a smartphone and internet connection.
You don’t even need to be home to change just about anything.
Add in a web camera and auto feeder, controllable valves for automatic water changes and you can keep fish at home from the other side of the planet!
