All I want is a Tat or Armatus, But no one has seemed to be getting any all year but one LFS that has a Tat for $80 but it's too large, Last year their were payara everywhere including Armatus. But now I can't even find Scomb's! Can anybody clear up what is going on with the Payara harvesting?

Marine Warehouse in Tampa has had at least one every time I go

I don't know about the harvest itself, but the recession here in the US has severely crippled the fish market. Alot of my LFSs are closing down completely.

I believe the poor payara market is due to the simple practice of "safe marketting". fish vendors who want to cut down their stock only purchase the most hot-selling fish (aka goldfish, tetras, and African cichlids). Although this may be good for business, it takes alot of the nice monster fish off the market.

The problem may also be a supply and demand thing. With money being tight these days (at least in the US), fewer and fewer people are setting up tanks; let along the massive tanks needed for keeping payaras. Since people can't afford to set up the tank; they don't buy the fish. Because people don't buy the fish; the LFSs stop stocking them. Because the LFSs stop stocking them; alot of MFKs are pissed off:swear:.

But then again, these are just theories. Personally, I haven't seen a single Payara on the market for at least 2 years:(.

Exactly what I thought...

I had a Payara not to long ago..

Was by far my favorite. I acquired him when he was not to much over 3" and was stunning.

Shortly there later, his personal tank broke a seal and I was in a crunch.. I removed him and added him to (to my own stupidity) my 125 with a few SA/CA Cichlids, just till I had his tank fixed.

At first I noticed that these cichlids didn't care at all, nor payed him much attention. So I figured "Well .. he's in a much larger tank, plenty of space and room for hiding need that every arise... and put off fixing his tank..

There when he sat close to roughly - close to 9" one of my yellow labs really showed signs of aggression and would nip at him from time to time. Again, I failed to fix up what should have been his home.

One morning I woke to find him pretty beat up, stressed out and gasping. For the most part his dorsal and anal fin had been completely nipped away. In fear of the worst, I added him to a little 35gal. hospital in hopes he wouldn't make a turn for the worse.

I don't think he quite lasted 48hours. I was horrified, I took all the right measures to see that he recovered.. Had I in-fact, used my head and just placed him in the 35, for the time it would have taken to reseal his original tank, I more or less would still have him today.

.. I have often thought about getting another... and honestly don't have anything to back up me not getting one...

Here are a few shots of him when he was give or take 5-6"
