What has happened to the Payara market?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My LFS gets in scombs and raphs mostly. The only wholesaler that had them in the past couple months wanted twice as much as the rest.

As for armatus and tats, I haven't seen any. One LFS says they get tats in once a year or so for 70 dollars, but I kind of doubt that.

I also know that lots of SA wholesalers went out of business in the past couple years.

If there is a shop in your area that has a tat for sale I suggest you jump on it.I have'nt seen any around for some time and the Armatus seems to be easier to find than tats.

If my lfs had a tat for $80 I'd grab it up with out looking back. I have never even seen one for sale around here or on any online vendor list. I did think Shark Aquarium had some armatus up for sale, I think they ship? Not sure. Scombs seem to be very easy to find, my lfs gets them in regularly and I've seen several vendors with them up for sale. The whole "sudden death" thing makes me hesitate.

Can you do lay away?:ROFL:If you can't get the cash from somewhere there's no telling when another might turn up.I thought your issue was that it was too big which I would have to somehow accomodate given how slow they grow and how seldom they are for sale.

I had a Payara not to long ago..

Was by far my favorite. I acquired him when he was not to much over 3" and was stunning.

Shortly there later, his personal tank broke a seal and I was in a crunch.. I removed him and added him to (to my own stupidity) my 125 with a few SA/CA Cichlids, just till I had his tank fixed.

At first I noticed that these cichlids didn't care at all, nor payed him much attention. So I figured "Well .. he's in a much larger tank, plenty of space and room for hiding need that every arise... and put off fixing his tank..

There when he sat close to roughly - close to 9" one of my yellow labs really showed signs of aggression and would nip at him from time to time. Again, I failed to fix up what should have been his home.

One morning I woke to find him pretty beat up, stressed out and gasping. For the most part his dorsal and anal fin had been completely nipped away. In fear of the worst, I added him to a little 35gal. hospital in hopes he wouldn't make a turn for the worse.

I don't think he quite lasted 48hours. I was horrified, I took all the right measures to see that he recovered.. Had I in-fact, used my head and just placed him in the 35, for the time it would have taken to reseal his original tank, I more or less would still have him today.

.. I have often thought about getting another... and honestly don't have anything to back up me not getting one...

Here are a few shots of him when he was give or take 5-6"

(not the greatest pictures.. was new to snapping shots of fish)

There is a place not to far away, that actually has a good number of these guys for sale. There only tiny, maybe 3" ... and the price is right too...

maybe..

Anywho.. sorry to take over the thread. KillDog102. I hope it works out for you an you stumble across what your looking for

NICE ARMATUS!!!

If I saw an affordable tat I would jump on it. My only limitation is that I only have a 40 breeder for now, so I probably wouldn't pick it up if it was 9 + inches. Anyways, all the LFS from here get their fish from the same wholesalers, so I am talking to my boss and I keep reminding him that if he sees it to get it. It would be much cheaper at work. I am also trying to hint at some LFS that they should also order from south american wholesalers.
