What have you housed with your Polleni?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i kepy my 'big spot' in a community tank with large CA cichlids for a long time.
all the fish were between 6-10". the biggest being a male dovii. there was also a trimac, midas, festae, managuense and a few otehr odd and ends.
the paratilapia was 5-6" and the second most dominant fish. it would beat the crap out of other fish when they threatened it. this was in a big tank though, i wouldnt reccomend trying a mix like that in something small.

after it got to 6"+ i moved it into a devided tank with a trimac on the other side, for the rest of the time i had it.

i wouldnt keep one with fish that couldnt hold their own or get eaten. IMO they do just fine with similarly sized central american cichlids, as long as there is plenty of space.

Polleni large or small spot are aggressive with conspecifics ignoring most other fish. Remember, however, these fish are piscivorous so small fish will get eaten. I keep mine in a variety of groups- large central american cichlids, similarly sized africans and lastly other Malagasy fish- the later consisting of Ptychochromis species which usually get more stressed than central americans with the prescence of Paratilapia.

you really have to try it to see if it works out. for ex. my polleni beat the crap out of everything in a huge 300g when i bought it. it went in to my oscar tank with two oscars and a ornate bichir and beat up my os at first but now they actually sleep next to eachother and never even flare their gills. so my point is you really never know what your fish is going to do unless you try it.
