I've been reading that in order to keep rays, you have to have a heater guard. I was looking at the Visi-Therm Stealth heater with the plastic casing around it and just want to know if that was sufficient enough for protection?

Thanks..

I have four tanks running and four visi therm stealths rating from 25 watts to 250. None of them that I have felt seem to get that hot. They do a good job and are accurate and durable. However I don't understand the purpose of the heater guard ? Is this to protect the heater from being broken ? Or the ray from getting burned ? If its to keep the heater from being broken a stealth should be fine. If its to keep the ray from being burned it would seem any heater of the same wattage would dissipate similar heat in which case I would be lead to believe you would still need a heater guard.

Both. I use a heater guard only on glass heaters. I have had them shatter. Also it keeps fish away from getting burned.

It's mostly to keep rays from getting burned because of their sensitive skin. Plus, I don't think rays are mobile enough to shatter the heaters.

To clarify, my question is what heater do you guys use in your ray tanks?

Ebo Jager, and it's in the sump.

most of us keep our heaters in our sumps. otherwise u can make a guard out of PVC, or buy a heater guard. yes a stealth will still burn a ray.

Stealths...... 7 of them. 2 in sump and 5 in the pond.

If you can't sump them, just put them in the corner up off the bottom. IF you really want to play it safe fab up a gaurd for the Stealth..... It's not going to hurt.

ebo jager and stealths...

rena smart heater.. no guard. I have 2 in my tank and they are awesome. they don't feel because it heats the water flowing through it instead of outside of it, and the light is really nice to have to know if its on or off or if something is wrong it will flash.

I use the stealths, but don't use any guards. I just put enough suction cup clips to
group close together so as no ray can get behind them and take a rest, thus getting burned.
