what if, amazon collecting trip

I know several folks who have gone fish collecting in Peru with Margarita Tours

You don't bring back the fish you catch yourself but have a wholesaler ship once you return.

It's not easy (or cheap) to ship large specimens...but it's not impossible, especially since the pros are packing and using oxygen, sedatives, etc.

lol ok you should be dandy then, I was just trying to look out...I have seen some people who think because they went camping once in an RV when they were 5 that they would be fine hitting the Amazon and they were infact quite miserable once they got out on the river lmao.

Lol no problem, and I know the people you are talking about. Lol. I do appreciate you pointing that out though because if I would have been someone who was like that I would be making a big mistake. Not many people would try to point out the dangers and troubles because to a lot of us, its obvious but u did and that's pretty cool of ya.

Yeah I looked at the margarita tours website and seemed like the collecting they were doing were mostly from seine nets and things like that, which for peacock bass I just don't think matches up to a good rod and reel.

As far as the shipping goes, I would be willing to pay a little more to be sure that my bigger fish were still just as safe as if I was shipping Tetras. But I would have to catch a bass first, which is why I was unsure of the net way of collecting. But I did send a message to George at sharkaquarium so I am hoping he will be able to help me out a little.

I know they ship them to you, but like you said bigger fish make it a little more difficult. And I really want to find out if they even let you collect with a rod and reel, even if I supply it myself

Wow this has brought about some good discussions, and all of this for something I won't be able to do for quite some time, mfk rocks!

Why not make a trip to S. Florida? The canals there have significant populations and you could bring them home quite readily.

i haven't had first hand experience with either s. florida or amazon , but i gotta say, it would be a very very different experience.... and it would be an experience thats well worth it if u can afford to do so. but then, s. florida would definitely be a cheap alternative xD

Very true points. I had actually considered doing something similar and just using the money for the trip for a bigger tank.....but I cant get the thought out of my head that what if I were to catch and bring back some of those crazy rare cichla? Intermedia, fogo, etc. Like I said in my original post though this won't be anything I do for quite some time but when the time comes I think just the possibility of seeing these beasts in the wild would be worth the money... but we'll see how it all plays out and if I even get to take the trip.... if I do I will be posting pics all over mfk lol

That would be a fun trip indeed. Getting out of the country is always fun. Going back to japan next year.
