i want a battery operated air pump that kicks on when the power is lost. can someone point me in the right direction?

No such thing. The pump would need to be wired into the circuit box on a relay. You're best chance is to find a regular air pump that had a back up battery in it

You could also buy a battery back up unit at staples or Walmart and plug your air pump into it. Its a simple unit most people use them for computers or oxygen tanks works great
