So my four year old daughter has been helping me take care of my two other tanks everyday for a few months now and begging me to put one in her room. So I got out one of my old tanks and want to get her more involved in the hobby. I think she would get a good kick out of watching cichlids breed and raise there young. I have been considering Convicts, any other ones I should look into more? Thanks for the ideas.
Convicts are a perfect starter fish. Firemouths are good for a long time in a 29. Not CA but jewels would work for her and a lot of young pairs would be OK in a twenty nine. I`ve spawned JD, Texas, Uropthalmus, and I`m sure others that just don`t come to mind right now, all in a 20 or 29 gallon.
We have a pair of Bolivian rams that breed every few weeks in a 29 gallon. Very interesting to watch and they live with a few peaceful tetras with no issues.
Rainbows are another good choice. I'd be wary of some of the larger growing centrals mentioned above. Males can be rough, and there isn't much room to hide in a 29.
I would say multipinosa, or nanoluteus. Also, live bearers are really fun, and simple enough. Like endlers, or ameca splendins. I am working with a wild varient of swords (X. Mayea) right now, and they are a blast, and my children all enjoy watching the young grow.

I was looking through all of the good suggestions you all came up with, thank you. I think the Bolivian rams could work nicely, and then there could be a few tank mates as well. But the African Lake Tang would be really cool. Any species of them I should stay away from for look more at? Please keep the great ideas flowing.
