my 4 year old is enjoying our cryptoheros sajica in a 36 gallon... she's feeding them daily. I don't think I have a m/f pair though so I hope they don't end up killing each other. If it happens, a new lesson - the circle of life!
If you are going to do shell dwellers, I would suggest neolamprologus multiefasciatus. They are a blast, and you can have like 20 or more in a 29 gallon. I have some myself.

I have one pair of rams with 4 penguin tetras, 3 glass catfish and a small bristlenose pleco. Any smaller peaceful tetra would work. The rams are able to guard the eggs/fry with no issues. Rams are bottom dwellers, the other fish are mid to top dwellers. It works out well. The rams do not dig up our plants and lay eggs on a clay pot dish.
If you are looking to buy rams, Malawi Aquatics in Florissant MO has great stock. We purchased ours there and are happy with them.
Thanks for the info. I went to Malawi a few months back. They did not have what I was after at the time but do have a large selection of cichlids and other freshwater fish. I might go there to get some of these little guys.
I've breed cons in a 20 with no problems. Offend times the female would beat on the male. So it depends on the fish. I've also breed firemouths in a 29 they were roughly 4".they did wonderful together being it was a tank with just sand and one hiding place. So I would suggest getting 4-6 small firemouths and grow them out once you have a pair let em breed once they reach 3-4" then move em to a 40 breeder or 55 gallon tank.
