not looking for a show tank and but I think a single midas or trimac would be cool, maybe try to get a breeding pair. I would try the frontosa but don't feel like breaking the bank to start a colony of them, juvies go for $40.00 in my area and they're not alot of them around.

sounds like you have solved the problem;)

What we really need to know then is, is this going to be a feature in your house? Is it your only tank? You say you are not new to fish keeping then perhaps the Discus idea isn’t so stupid move on to some thing new and a little different there is some superb info on them on here. Or did you really want that one odd ball tank? If so I love Oscars but they are bread and butter common as muck I love them in a big tank with other fish but always feels sorry for one or 2 on there own. As I said a 125 is a nice size planted community tank but sort of limits you to I large nasty fish. If you’re going to do that I would go really odd something like Frontosas like a breeding colony lots of colour again would look cool with plenty of rocks in it. At the end of the day what are you looking for out of this tank?;)

WOW!!! Not sure why you need all that info to answer his origian post.

just want some info on what might be a good choice for a cichlid? I got a 125 and would like to throw something in there that gets to be a decent size.

Oscars would be a great choice, you could also include a pair of Jack Dempseys. The O's will generally keep the top half with the Jd's taking the bottom. Only problems you will have is if they pair up and start breeding. That being the case though you could even make a tank divider.

If I were you- I would do a pair of oscars (GREAT beginner cichlid), a jack dempsey, an ornate pim catfish, a school of congo tetras, and a female convict. That would be a great tank.

If you have kept fish before and know about water quality why not get a pair of oscars..
they are not the meanest cichlids around but they provide hours of entertainment. you could add a pleco but the eggs wont last long if they spawn..
they need a water change at least every two weeks. 15-30%
for your first go at cichlids i reccomend picking a pair of one larger species, and leave it at that in your tank as mixing large cichlids is not easy and is best left to people who have kept them for few years as they have a tendancy to kill each other at the drop of hat.

your options.

a pair of oscars
or
pair of jack dempsey
or
pair
green terror
or
single red devil
or
single jaguar cichlid / possibly a pair in a 125 gall but could be problematic
or
pair of salvini
or
single flower horn

just some options for you..

I personally favor the Oscars as well. I have 4 my self. But I also have a Jack Dempsy and a Black Convict that I started out with and they are a good fish to start with!!!

I vote Green Terrors. They were my first large cichlids
