I'm looking for a good, personable CA cichlid that maxes out at 8-10". I have already put Amphilophus lyonsi on the list. I don't want something that hides all the time.

Rainbow cichlids are small and IME very personable, although some people don't like them bc they are so small compared to most CA

Jack Dempsey!

It can be hit or miss w/ JD. My mom's hides all the time and it's 6 years old. The good thing is they're not hard to find or expensive, so if you get one that isn't personable, you can trade it in and get another.

JD don't get 10 inches, usually not even 8.

So you can get some JDs that act personable eh? I'd actually like to have a JD if it was interactive.

There is no reason, other than early spawning, that a well cared for JD shouldn't pass the 8" mark. I remember at least 2 or 3 members here having 10"+ JD's back in the day (when this site was pfish). My lfs every now and then gets some monster JDs around 9-11", and I've seen some just shy of the 12" mark.

As for personality under 8", that's not an easy one. Most smaller cichlids are naturally more shy because they're more susceptible to predation than their larger cousins. Acaronia nassa are pretty interesting, but again, not exactly personable. They're not too shy, it's just they more often than not ignore you unless you're feeding them. They act very similarly to the larger Caquetaia sp. (kraussi/spectabile/myersi, not the glass banging umbies).

:) As much as I love Sals (favourite CA cichlid bar none), they're just as hit or miss as JDs when it comes to personality, perhaps even worse. Maybe a pair would be better than a single male ;)

true, but in general i've found it very hard to find personable cichlids under 12", a pair would be nice.
