true, but in general i've found it very hard to find personable cichlids under 12", a pair would be nice.

Very True! And I know a JD in very horriable conditions pushing 10" and strong will probably grow 2" in the right tank! I do like Sals also a pair would be sweet!

Salvini have never been considered an outgoing species. Darth Odo already owns one of the more outgoing 8-10" species...bet his istlanum isn't very shy. The one I had wasn't!

What about one of the astatheros genus? Or the Herichthys labridens complex? Dunno how outgoing they would be, but they'd be cool fish that don't get huge.

Neither sals or dempseys are known for being personable species, but I've had some dempseys, like my current one, that is somewhat outgoing but not yet to the point of handfeeding.

LABRIDENS! Now there's a great suggestion! Carpintis would also be a decent choice, if a little large... A buddy of mine has a 9" male, it's got every bit of the personality that your typical midas has.

I've never seen a JD over 8", personally. I'd like to see some of those 12-inchers. I don't doubt any of you. My mom's female is over 6 years old and only 7", but it did get a huge chunk bitten out of it by a male, so that's probably why. No, it's not stunted.

ive seen 11" jd's..

What about a green terror? I know they are actually SA but I have found mine to be a very interesting fish with a lot of character.

Maybe define what you are meaning by personable too.

Well I know Darth Odo did have some carpintis 'escondido', but sold them. Sucker! :) My ~4 year old male is a little over 10", so carpintis would be on the extreme long end of the scale. But very personable! H. pantostictus is on my list of fish to buy if Rapps has them available for my next group order!
