What is a good predatory fish to keep in a 45G (freshwater)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To be honest, I'm a bit of a gar noob as well, having just purchased my Florida gar recently. I have seen my guy on the bottom a good bit though. I think it's something a lot of gars do (both "true" and "false" gars apparently). The only gars I've never really seen on the bottom were the needle-nose.

My brother-in-law has a hujeta gar in his 90. I'll ask him if it ever hangs out on the bottom. You can also peruse the "Other characins" section on the forum for more info the the hujeta as well.

I looked into getting one, but it might not be the best idea for your tank given they can get 18" long. Also, never trust a catfish.

Hmm sounds wierd my gar used to be everywhere all the time, very active.....

To OP
I had my 1st tank like yours except with
a african butterfly fish,
When i kept them they were always interesting to watch,to me it was like having a mini arowana but with cooler fins
Zig zag and peacock
6 hujeta gars
1Albino and 1 delhezi bichir
With a pair of glass knife fish
Starry night eel
Ctenopoma
And a butis butis

Or you could do a a single fish tank
A congo puffer in my opinion is pretty predatory and aggressive

You could go for a few things in a 45g I think. Most of my ideas seem to be solitary though.
Sanchezi Piranha
Elongatus Piranha; The 'Black Mask' Elongs are MEAN things, plenty aggressive and very active.
Also maybe look at some wolf fish? I know some get too big for your tank but others stay small
Could also do a very large shoal of Exodons, in a 45G you could probably have 25+ in there. That would be impressive no doubt!

IMO a 45 would be good for a small goup of Exodon paradoxus, as stated above. Your tank is pretty small so that might be the best fit. They are like a tiny pirana cool little fish.
