i agree with heavyhitter and hybridtheoryd16

i love sumps for thier endless possibilites and the fact i can hide alot of stuff in there.
also sumps main advantage IMHO is that they are highly adaptable to what ever you are planning to keep in your tank be it fresh or salt, mechanical or biological filtration and so on.
but as the oscarguy said there are lots of good canisters out there that can work on your tank.
so dont count them out.

also you can have a look at my setup which i just did its a 6 foot by 30 inches by 30 inches and it has a sump.

Howdy,

I think the key questions are: Planted tank or not? On a budget or not? Like everything sealed or open water?

And don't believe that canisters are more work - I clean mine once per year... you just have to know what you're doing ;)

I plan on the less maintinence the better as i do far too much right now,

i seem to always feed to much food so my water needs changing quite often hence the thought of a sump i presume it creates more of a cleaning solution

my tank will be full of

fine gravel substrate
and lots and lots of ocean rock,
no plants or anything else
i plan on having a lid on the tank if thats what you mean

its going to be kept in our kitchen
thanks

Howdy,

I'd go with a canister: Less agitated surface area for the tank water to aerosolize - IMO that's kinda key in the kitchen. Noise, smell, bacteria, ...
