What is going on?

The snails were probably in your filter if you havent brought in anything new.
Ive fought fire with fire.whats good at wiping out small snails is bigger snails.Tanks with a few pomacea bridgsii in it rarely have enough leftover food for more than a very few smaller pond ramshorn or mts snails to survive.

My question is did the snails possibly come from the food? It's the only thing I can think of.

No, it's not possible.

I would guess they came in on your fish purchase back in oct and the numbers have slowly grown over the months . You didnt notice them before cause they were in the substrate and filters during daylight hours and when tank lights were on. Now their numbers have reached bigger proportions and breeding has skyrocketed so your seeing them now when lights are on. Clean out your cannister or hob filters and use the lettuce. Vacume your substrate good weekly . Thats my advice.

Now that you mentioned this, my MTS funnily enough have a hard time increasing their population. There is just too many mystery snails in my tank for them to cope with the competition.lol
