I don't know if you have come to an official conclusion, but he looks identical to a species that I have owned for quite some time. Synspilum would be the logical/common guess, but he looks to be a Herichthys Bocourti. I say this due to the seemingly yellowish overall color with a little green around the gills/head.

see how the spots stay in line and dont dip like a veija? thats why im inclined to say amphilophus. as far as the hericthys...my fish has no yellow but lots of red! also the spots also dip on the hericthys.
