what is it like owning a FESTAE?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its rewarding if you get them at fry (or no colour) And grow into a beautiful specimen. But mine was pretty shy not much of a wet pet. But when it had a tank mate (that it didn't kill) it was more active. mine were not aggressive to the eye but once lights were out and you woke up fish were attacked.... a pair I believe would be much more promising

My fish life is sparked up with Polys :)

+1 def better to get them small. I got my female at 1.5" over two years ago n she just had her first spawn on the 9th. Her transformation has been awesome to watch. As far as interaction with ppl my pair aren't too interactive with me although my male knows where I am in a room at all times. They are interactive with other fish though which can go anywhere from exciting to scary quickly. They are def a "mood" fish n when happy they show it with a colorful display. Def my favorite fish and well worth the time to grow out. Just make sure you get good quality Festae. Good luck :)

yea my dad loves the females, i like the males, i just wish they had like a jag mentality ya know what im sayin. cuz thier beautiful fish

Getting the Festae to a point where they start to provide you with some satisfaction, can be a very long trip. Once you have a bonded pair, it becomes magic, as I know that FlatfishLeo and other Festae owners can attest to. My Peruvian pair are amazing, my little female is about 6-7" and the male is 11". It is just awesome watching her do her motherly duties with the fry. And every night she puts every single one of them (theres about 500) to bed in the same pot they were born in. Just awesome fish, and these 2 are very personable. (not amphilophus personable, but not skiddish either)

My younger Ecuadorean pair not as much enjoyment with them, yet. The male is about 6" the female 5". They still act like teenagers, especially the male. But with maturity I am sure they will be awesome also. Then I have a 10" Ec male in a community tank, which will soon be getting himself an, (owner arranged LOL) girlfriend. So hopefully it all goes well.

So to make a long story short, if you have patience and good water quality skills, the Festae can be very rewarding in the end. And I mean you will need patience.

LOL Leo. Hahaha o guess im not that obsessed "yet". LOL u r da man. Wow. That sounds like a lot of tanks.

OP. Cichlids can be real small lake fish. Or monster "tank busters". But the one thing I have learned. Is that what you read in books is more "general" then fact. Everyones festae acts a bit different. My little guys and there parents. Were not shy as they were cautious. They flinched when I walked up to the tank. But then came up like they wanted a kiss. LOL or shrimp. Now if I were to make my own book on kribensis cichlids. Well... I had 12 of them little guys and it was like having a empty 125g tank. LOL so that text book would be fact. LOL

I have 20 festaes all 1" and love them and plan on finding other little festaes for them to not inbreed with

As with most fish, the different locals create different looks and color. From what I have learned the Ecuadorians get more robust, and are a taller fish. My Peruvians display more deep oranges and yellows while my Ecuadorians show more reds, greens and yellows.

Here are my Peruvian pair
