Lapracheri!

What I don't understand is that on his stock list he says its a hybrid, in his email he says it looks like a cross between a Lap and an Endli, but on the link he just says its a Guinea Lap. ???

I think it's a hybrid... look at the head on it. It's not narrow and somewhat pointed like a Guinea Lap. It's thick and broad, looking very snake-like, much more like an Endlicheri.

It's beautiful. It would look great. Right in that tank - right over there. *Drools*

Okay now I'm having a very heated debate with my boyfriend over this fish.

He's saying it looks more like a Bichir Bichir X Endlicheri. He's saying Laps don't have the dots running down the body that this fish does, but that Bichir Bichir does. And then he whacked me with the damn Aqualog Poly book and whipped out pictures to prove his point.

And now I don't know. Anyone have thoughts???

the head is still pretty narrow. the site which he linked those pics from is calling them Guinea lapradei from a different location, and thats why in his post he said Guinea lap. its the same fish he has. basically he's calling it 'sp. hybrid' in his stock list because the markings, not the head, gives the impression it might be a hybrid (thats why in his email to you he said it "looks like..."). He's not saying that they are definitely hybrid. So take your pick :D

another head shot - pretty narrow...

as for what your boyfriend said, thats because *all* of those *live* specimens in the Aqualog book are Guinea lapradei. They are NOT bichir bichir.

Very nice none the less. I think im gonna email toyin soon. ha ha ha ha ha

From what I've seen, which is just the fish we've had, the Guinea Lap has more of a pointed nose and head as opposed to it's Nigerian relative. The eyes are sort of set off to the side of the head rather than perched atop like a rattlesnake. Like the endli. I suppose we could argue this til we all turn blue, but the fish is what it is, a mystery. Personally, I believe it's a real hybrid. Not a Bichir Bichir X Lap, just an Endli X Lap. After that I will say that could be because I don't believe in the existance of Bichir Bichir. Period. Bag on me all ya want, it's just what I think.

N I'm gettin one of those awesome fish! Yays!

i agree if this fish is a hybrid, it'd be lap x endli. and the lapradei part would be the guinea lap, which is what your boyfriend pointed out with the Aqualog book pics, even though those fish are misID in the book. bichir bichir doesn't have anything to do with this mystery bichir...it only enters into discussion because of misinformation in a book

:headbang2 well it came in today the Polypterus .sp Hybrid Guinea and it is 13 inches long female and just little thin. she is active and she has eaten silversides and she is still swimming around and Toyin did a great job packing this fish .has a vary strange pattern and has a head like a Endlicheri and the body of a Lapradii and when her color comes in more. I can be more sure on the diffrent patterens of the other fish she is in a tank with a Kolibe and guinea Lapradi and 2 Endlicheri . vary cool I love this fish Thanks again Toyin #1 guy the best, 16 fish and counting going on 6 yrs with him.

A true endi x lap hybrid forget where the pic is from but its a true cross from Japan-Anne

i too forget which japanese site it was from. but i can't remember if it says its a confirmed hybrid (as in they know what the parents are), or a suspect hybrid (i.e. educational guess). i was under the impression that it was the latter. do you remember Anne?
